From dashboards to decisions
Hospitality teams have more charts than ever. The opportunity is to make those charts matter to daily commercial decisions.
Most hotels are not short of numbers. Occupancy, ADR, RevPAR, direct share, paid search performance and website conversion appear in different tools, spreadsheets and management reports. Yet the same questions keep resurfacing: What changed? Why might it have changed? What should we do next?
A dashboard is a map, not a plan
Dashboards excel at summarising the known. They are less useful when a team cannot connect a change to a decision. For example, an increase in website traffic may be irrelevant if the additional visitors are not qualified, or if booking conversion and margin deteriorate.
Good performance conversations bring together context from revenue, marketing, digital experience and operations.
Build around business questions
Instead of starting with a list of available KPIs, choose five recurring decisions. They might concern acquiring incremental demand, protecting direct-channel profitability, reducing abandonment, improving campaign allocation or reaching higher-value guest segments.
Then decide which leading and lagging indicators would help make each decision responsibly.
Introduce an opportunity register
Maintain a short record of possible improvements, including evidence, commercial impact, effort, confidence, owner and the next validation step. This allows the team to distinguish a genuine opportunity from a visually dramatic but commercially minor metric movement.
“Mobile checkout completion fell after the last booking-engine release.” The next action is not necessarily a redesign. First segment the data, check implementation changes and test whether the movement is statistically and commercially meaningful.
Make the reporting rhythm actionable
A weekly commercial review can be short if each issue is presented in four parts: what happened, what evidence supports the interpretation, what is uncertain and which decision is being requested.
The objective is not to remove human judgement. It is to put better evidence in front of the people who can act.
When every metric is important, the next action stays unclear.
Start with one question the leadership team returns to every week. Improve the way the answer is prepared and discussed. That is often where the first meaningful digital intelligence gains emerge.
Let's connect the question to your business.
